2015 Mazda CX-9 Review
We test drove the 2015 Mazda CX-9 for a week, all opinions are our own.

Mazda has become one of my top picks for cars, especially when it comes to safety.  The new 2015 Mazda CX-9 was the perfect size for our family.   We test drove the 2015 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring All Wheel Drive (AWD) in Titanium Flash Mica.  The price is pretty average for an SUV and the cost for the configuration we drove is $39,890 – MSRP: From $29,985.  This vehicle can tow anywhere from 2,000-3,500 lbs, not bad for an SUV!   It also has a ton of trunk space.

Thankfully gas prices are going down so we didn’t need to fill up to much with the CX-9.  One thing I absolutely loved is that on the dash it told me exactly how many miles I had to go before I needed to fill up.  Most cars I have to push a button to find that info and on the CX-9 it’s always displayed.   It has a 20.1 gal tank and you can get up to 16 City, 22 Highway, average 18 MPG.

We appreciated all the finishes and details.  While the car costs under $40k, we felt like we were driving a vehicle that was double that price!  The ride was smooth and it did extremely well in the little to no snow we got this year.  What’s with the no snow this year??  Of course it snowed during the CX-9’s photo shoot we did.

Features we enjoyed:

  • 3.7L V6 DOCHC 24-Valve Engine
  • 20 Inch Aluminum Alloy Wheels
  • Rain Sensing Wipers
  • 7 Passenger Seating
  • Seat Position Memory
  • LED Day Time Running Lights (Hubby LOVES LED lights!)
  • Heat and Air Control for Backseat

One feature that we just have to brag, the back seat!  I loved how you can adjust how far and close the seat was to the front seat.   This feature is one of my favorites!  Why?  Chris loves to have the drivers seat far back and it always hits my knees if I sit behind him.  In the CX-9 I can comfortably sit behind him and push my seat back, even recline a bit!

Safety Features we like:

  • 36 Month / 36,000 Mile “Bumper to Bumper” Warranty
  • 60 / 60,000 Mile Powertrain Warranty
  • Blind Spot Monitoring System
  • 3-Row Side Airbags with Roll-over Protection
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Backup Sensors
  • Dynamic Stability Control andTraction Control System

While we really like the safety features, we are a little reserved due to the IIHS rating this vehicle received, poor for small overlap front, marginal for roof stretnch as well as head restraints and seats.  We are actually very impressed with all the Top Safety Pick+ scores from IIHS for Mazda.  Both the 2015 Mazda CX-5 and the 2015 Mazda6 received a Top Safety Pick+.  We’ll also be testing out the Mazda3 that received a Top Safety Pick+ as well.

Overall the 2015 Mazda CX-9 with AWD is a beautiful vehicle and a great SUV for families.  It’s luxury, without the luxury price tag!
