A visit to our local animal shelter – Sergeant’s Pet Care & emBARK

Bergen County Animal Shelter

A few weeks ago our little family went to visit our local animal shelter.  The Bergen County Animal shelter which is our local shelter was actually one of the shelters that Tiffani Thiessen visited a week prior to us!  Tiffani has joined Sergeant’s Pet Care Products and emBARK on Pet Health to educate families during responsible pet owners month and they are asking each and everyone to take a pledge. For each person who takes the pledge you donate a health kit to an animal awaiting their forever home.   They are donating up to 5,000 kits and I hope they reach that goal!!

I spoke with Deborah who is the main gal who organizes and knows all at our shelter.  She was kind enough to take time from her busy day and show us all the beautiful animals that need a home!  Deborah told us a lot about the shelter.  I was so impressed with the high adoption rates and how they take in EVERY animal that needs help.

I had asked her if it was a no-kill shelter and she said that’s a very confusing topic… they don’t kill an animal because they’re there too long, but if an animal comes in and is beyond any medical help the only humane thing to do is put that animal down.

While we were there we actually saw them bring in a few strays!  We couldn’t take pictures because they didn’t know how the dog would react plus we couldn’t get too close – but it was very nice to see them doing this!  We visited during non visiting hours and they were in the process of cleaning out the cages.  Yup, they clean the area daily.

What hit me the hardest is when Deborah showed me a few pups.. some of them weren’t used to being in cages.. they were used to a nice warm home, a nice yard, and most of all a loving family.

When people can no longer keep their pets due to apartments/living arrangements their animals are welcome to the shelter – but so so heartbreaking.  All the pets looked healthy thanks to the amazing care they’re receiving at the Bergen County Animal Shelter.

Once you get a pet it’s your duty to take care of them.  They depend on you just as a child would and you can even consider them your pet babies!  The only reason I didn’t take a dog home is because our apartment doesn’t allow pets, and hubby has allergies.  However, when the time comes Deborah said she’ll help us pick out the perfect one for our family – they always aim to find the perfect match!

We just loved how this kitty cat drank his water!  Too precious!

This ongoing care can protect pets from disease, behavior problems or other health issues that if left untreated could eventually come to cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.”
So please, take the pledge so these precious babies can take this little present to their forever home!
