Have you always wanted a REALLY good easy pulled pork recipe? How about a delicious pulled pork sauce for your bbq pork? Well, today we’re going to share our slow cooker pulled pork plus our recipe for the best bbq sauce for pulled pork!
How to make pulled pork
Our pulled pork recipe is really simple, all you need is a few ingredients and it’s as easy as putting the pork roast in the crockpot with your favorite sauce. We think a homemade bbq sauce for pulled pork is always the best way to go. You can easily make the sauce right before you start making bbq pork.
First, you’ll need a decent sized pork shoulder or pork butt, they’re the same thing, so don’t worry if it says butt or shoulder, and butt isn’t from the butt. Place the pork shoulder right into your slow cooker. Take a large onion or two medium onions and slice them up and place right on top or you could place some on top and under the pork shoulder.
Once you have the onion and pork nestled inside you can pour on your favorite sauce and some water. Cook your pork on low for 8-10 hours or high for 4-6 hours. We usually go for 4 and a half hours with a 3lb pork shoulder and then shred.
We place the shredded pork back into the slow cooker and cook for another hour to get that sauce really into the meat. Now that it’s no longer a big piece of bbq pork it really needs that extra time to cook with the sauce.
My husband and I love a tangy sauce on our bbq pork, so I make our pulled pork sauce from scratch. It’s only a few ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. If you want a honey bbq sauce you can use honey instead of brown sugar.
- Brown Sugar
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- Coconut Aminos (or soy sauce)
- Water
- Vinegar
- Worchesthire Sauce
- Smoked Paprika
- Granulated Garlic
I make just one batch of my homemade bbq sauce for our bbq pulled pork recipe and it works perfectly! A 16oz container of your favorite bbq sauce will work too. This is such an easy pulled pork recipe that can be made even better with your easy bbq sauce recipe. Most people have all the sauce ingredients at home!
To make our bbq pulled pork sandwich I just put some of the slow cooker bbq pulled pork onto a kaiser roll and then top with my coleslaw recipe. Serve it with a pickle and you have a delicious pulled pork sandwich for dinner or lunch! We love making enough for leftovers. The combination of the warm pulled pork with the cold coleslaw is divine and you will absolutely love this recipe! We highly recommend you try our homemade bbq sauce! If you like it sweeter just add a little bit more sugar or honey.
We hope you enjoy our bbq pulled pork recipe as much as we do!

BBQ Pulled Pork Slow Cooker
Our BBQ Pulled Pork recipe is a keeper! This a bbq pulled pork slow cooker recipe that you can make hours before dinner time for a quick and easy dinner. We love making pulled pork sandwiches, and we always serve bbq pulled pork with coleslaw!
- 3 lbs pork shoulder
- 16 oz bbq sauce
- 1-2 cups water
- 1 large onion (sliced)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
-
In a slow cooker add the pork, onions, bbq sauce, water, and onions.
-
Cook on high for 4-5 hours or low for 8-10 hours.
-
Remove the meat from the slow cooker, trim the fat, and shred.
-
Once fully shredded place back into the slow cooker.
-
Mix 1/4 of the bbq sauce with cornstarch and then add to slow cooker, cook for 1/2-1 hour.
-
Serve on Kaiser Rolls topped with Coleslaw.
We add in water and that will make the bbq sauce very loose, if you want it thicker you can leave the water out. Since the pork is really fatty we like to add more liquids so that the liquids will keep the fats and we can just take the meat and add fresh sauce if needed.
