This seasoning is so flavorful and delicious. I’ve even used it with chickpeas or mushrooms on Meatless Monday. The key to any great seasoning recipe is using quality spices. I like to purchase my spices in bulk and make all of my own seasoning mixes. We even have a recipe up for taco seasoning mix that you must try!
Homemade Fajita Seasoning Recipe
This recipe is a great spice blend. You may already have most of these stable spices in your spice cabinet. It contains chili powder, salt, paprika, cumin, onion, garlic, oregano, cayenne powder, and pepper. For the onion and garlic, you can use either a garlic powder or granulated garlic. Just mix it up in a small bowl and you have your seasoning mix ready for go. No need to buy store bought. This is our main chicken seasoning recipe and we love it even on plain old chicken breasts just for eating in a burrito bowl.
How to use our this seasoning
- Use as a marinade (with a little citrus and olive oil)

HOW TO STORE HOMEMADE SEASONING MIXES
Ball Mason 8oz Quilted Jelly Jars with Lids and Bands, Set of 12The way you store your spices is very important, especially if you buy spices in bulk. I was using small jars that were supposed to be meant for spices until I noticed that my seasonings were getting dull. For example, my chili powder was brown in the spice jar, but beautifully red in the mason jar since it was airtight.
Spices do not like air and if they’re exposed to air they will not stay fresh long. Keeping them in an air tight container prevents moisture and oxidation from ruining your spices.
Opt for glass over plastic and keep them away from the light. We keep ours in a spice drawer and they are always fresh when we need them. When shooting I used different jars and these are SAID to be airtight, but nope.. Thankfully I keep my bulk spices in large mason jars so I can’t wait to get more of these smaller mason jars to switch out to instead.
HOW LONG WILL THIS SEASONING MIX LAST?
It really depends on when you make your seasoning mix and when you purchased your spices. Spices and seasonings can last a long time, some up to four years if they’re whole spices. Ground spices are usually good for 2-3 years and dried herbs for about 1-3 years. If there’s no aroma or the spice isn’t flavorful like it should be then it’s time to replace them.
There’s no wrong way to use this simple seasoning recipe. It’s such a delicious flavor and when you pair it with your protein of choice and some peppers and onions it makes your house smell like an authentic Mexican Restuarant! There’s no need for takeout with this recipe. I like to marinade my protein prior to cooking to ensure that it will really flavor each bite.
You can easily double or triple this batch if you’ll be using it often. Mexican food is my husband’s favorite and if it was up to him we’d have fajitas every night.
Use this seasoning to make fajita slow cooker chicken, fajita chicken salad, sometimes I even sprinkle it on some chicken wings! If you’re meal planning and want tons of flavor on your chicken breast, sprinkle some on with a little olive oil before it hits the grill.
We hope you enjoy this recipe and can’t wait to hear what you cook up with this seasoning mix!
