Our French Toast Donuts with Bacon makes for such an easy donut recipe! A simple maple glazed donut recipe topped with crispy thick cut bacon, more maple syrup, and powdered sugar. Special thanks to Smithfield for sponsoring this recipe.
Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, and dessert. well it’s safe to say that it’s most likely a favorite for everyone! We all love french toast for breakfast and we all love bacon in our house too. We thought why not bring the two together for the ultimate dessert that can be served with our holiday breakfast party?
I could easily make a quick batch of dough for the donuts, but to make it easier (hello holiday prep is already crazy!) I use canned biscuit dough. Nothing fancy, just the stuff that comes in a tube!
The most important part to this recipe is GOOD bacon. The biscuit donut is just the vessel that holds all the deliciousness and soaks it up. Don’t worry, the donut will not taste like a biscuit. It’s sweet and delicious and the bacon really helps cut the sweetness. You can leave off the powdered sugar if you’d like less sugar.
While I fry up the bacon in the pan for the donuts for our holiday breakfast I bake the remaining bacon in the oven to serve with eggs, hashbrowns, and bagels!
Smithfield Cherrywood Stack Pack Bacon is a hit with everyone all season long. We love getting thick cut and regular so everyone can have their favorite. It’s great for so many recipes, and of course, just enjoying it on its own.
How to Make Donuts
I like to use a fun cookie cutter for the donuts. Who said donuts need a round hole? My daughter loves having fun in the kitchen with me and this time she picked out heart. She loved learning how to make donut holes in fun shapes. Sometimes we do stars, flowers, but rarely a regular hole. You can do whatever fun shape you’d like. By using biscuit dough we really cut down all the prep work, but you can use any old fashioned donut recipes or even baked donut recipe and then follow the rest of our recipe.
Place bacon into a skillet and get it nice and crispy. Then once your bacon is fully cooked just set it aside as we’ll be using that to top our donuts. Take your donuts and place them into a saucepan or a fryer that is tempted to 375 degrees F. You want to cook the donuts on both sides until golden brown. We allow the donuts to cool just a little before dunking right into maple syrup. Then you can make the glaze and top with bacon.
How to make Donut Glaze
Right after we dunk our donuts into maple syrup we put them right into the glaze. We combine the powdered sugar, milk, maple syrup, and vanilla in a small frying pan until bubbly. Then we place the donut right into the glaze and top with the bacon.
The glaze is great for the donuts and it’s so delicious. We even dip some of our plain bacon right into it. Go ahead and serve it up if you have extras after you’re finished making the donuts.
